Step 1- Read all the comments from the previous assignment.
Step 2- Choose one comment which is thoughtful.
Step 3-
First, paraphrase the comment you are responding to: For example: “Mr. Ali thinks that…”
Then, write a question about the chosen comment. The question must be: clear, sincere, useful and be the sort of question which leads to more questions. The question you write must complicate the comment’s argument, make the reader of the comment you are questioning think deeper. Stir up some intellectual trouble.

I thought that Kipa Sherpa’s comment was very thoughtful. She put in high details, and things that came from her heart. Ms. Sherpa said that responsibility is the main idea of this speech. Ms. Sherpa also said that the challenges of our generation are the economical crisis and the Flu that’s been going around. She has also stated that the economical crisis is going down and stock markets are going up. Well, I have questions for Ms. Sherpa, what caused the economical crisis? And what caused the economical crisis to get better? Why did the stock market go down? And what caused the stock market to go up? Other than these questioning questions, I thought Ms. Sherpa’s comment was intelligent and very thoughtful.

I think that Mirheta’s comment was really interesting and thoughtful. The essay was interesting because she put in a lot of details about what Barack Obama said in the video. She made me understand the speech even more. The essay was outstanding that it almost answered all my questions. The question that she didn’t answer was, what about the flu? What other challenges do we have to face? These are my questions. Even though you did not answer these questions, it was still a great comment to read! The last thing I want to add to this comment is how would you determine what are the challenges we are going to face in the future?
ReplyDeleteMr. Derek Rose comment was very short, but it had hit some important topics. He explained what the three important words which are education, responsibility and future. He gave his reason and stated what he thought was the main idea of the speech. I agree with him when he said we need to find our talent whether it singing or physical science, but how is school suppose to help us find out our talent if there are so many budget cuts? Global warming is a big problem but how is our generation suppose to change it. We are not going to change until it gets hotter, the ice bergs start melting and all the animals die and we go into world hunger. We don’t change until we learn what will happen the scientist are not sure what will happen exactly and neither am I we need to experience what will happen to change.
ReplyDeleteI think that Megan Carroll’s comment was very thoughtful. She included some quotes from President Obama‘s speech, but she still included her own thoughts and opinions. One thing that Ms. Carroll wrote that caught my eye was when she said “Education was one of the most important words because it is imperishable. You need it throughout life and once you have the education you can’t lose it.” in my opinion this is the truth. I also think that the question she asked President Obama was really thoughtful. Her question was, “So here is my question to president Obama, what are you going to do to get jobs to parents especially single parents.” I agree with her question because with this bad economy it is really hard for people to get jobs. If you are a single parent for any reason, it will be super hard to raise your child or children if you don’t have enough money for food, clothes, shelter, and other necessities. Some questions I have for Ms. Carroll are what other challenges do think our generation has? Also, did you believe and agree with everything President Obama said? Or do you disagree with some of the things he mentioned? What do you think are some other expectations everyone has for us and others
ReplyDeleteMr. Rosendo’s speech was encouraging to stay in school. He kept saying the same thing though. Go to school or you won’t know how to organize the money that you spend and/or you will be poor. It is important to go to school but there are other benefits of going to school. What are the other benefits of going to school? Are they helpful to people? What if someone is rich and they are going to school. Why are they even going?
ReplyDeleteI think that Mirheta Osmanovic’s comment was one of the most thoughtful. Mirheta wrote a detailed comment about President Barack Obama’s back to school speech. The opinions that she stated were thoughtful and detailed. Mirheta said that we should be doing something constructive with our lives, like learning and even writing stories or reading. We shouldn’t be watching T.V. or playing Xbox all day. She also says that there are many benefits of going to school, and many consequences when you don’t go to school. Mirheta says that the challenges of our generation are: being focused, and building reading skills. I also believe that these are challenges. I do have a few questions for Mirheta, though. First of all, what are some more benefits of going to school? Can the consequences of not going to school affect our future drastically? In what ways do you think that the attacks of September 11, 2001 changed our lives forever? How can other children that have the same challenges as you face their challenges and improve?
ReplyDeleteMirheta Osmanovic’s comments about President Barack Obama’s speech were inspiring.
Though Ms. Arielle’s speech is small her words are fairly important and interesting. “If you succeed you can achieve. Work isn’t boring unless you find a common interest”. The second thing I like about her speech was that she said the most important thing about President Barack Obama’s speech is focus (I don’t necessarily think that’s the MOST important thing but it is in my case) I think that, that is a very important topic for many kids today (just not ALL kids). So in the end Ms. Arielle’s speech was very encouraging to stay in school. Ms. Arielle’s speech, though very small and just written as an assignment I believe that if read to other students it can encourage them to be better in school.
ReplyDeleteMs. Osmanovic's comment on the speech was really thoughtful and interesting. She wrote about kids should do something more useful to ourselves than playing games. She also stated the positives and the negatives about going and not going to school. Ms. Osmanovic's comment answered most of my questions, but I still have some questions unanswered. My question is if kids has same goals and dreams, is it possible for them to work together and overcome problems together?
ReplyDeleteMs. Ferd’s comment was long and full of inspiring information. Ms. Ferd brought the point of Obama’s speech. She had described why she thought the three words responsibility, goals, and education were the most important words in the whole speech. Ms. Ferd said that if every body in the world felt safe, it would improve students study habits and focusing skills. Well if everybody in the world felt safe why would that improve students study habits and focusing skills? Ms. Ferd also said that another challenge of her generation was peer pressure. But isn’t it the children’s fault for choosing friends like that who want to encourage them into doing bad things? Ms. Ferd’s comment was interesting and I thought that it was well done.
ReplyDeleteI thought that Mr.George's comment was pretty interesting. He said that global warming imposes a threat on our nation, and it does. If global warming gets any worse than it already is, polar bears, penguins and many other species that live in the Arctic and Antarctic will go extinct. If we want a future not only for our country, but for our world, we must band together and make a difference. Only a little bit of contribution can go a long way in helping the earth. And yes, we are just kids, but together we can make all the difference in the world.
ReplyDeleteMr.Rosendo's comment was very intelligent, but slightly off because "Education 2. School 3. And responsibility, for education I would rank it as a 10 because without education then the world would be a disaster; we couldn’t organize the amount of money for things that keeps us alive"...education is important but when you think carefully about the comment made, school and education are the same thing and if you were to rank them school would come before education. I also agree with the comment because we all need education in our lives and without this live would be a disaster.
ReplyDeleteI thought that Mr. Aparicio’s comment was interesting. It talks about how life wouldn’t be the same without school, and teachers. His three words were: parents, teachers, and school. He believes that our most important problem right now is the economy. He said that more people should get a better education and become doctors and nurses and lawyers. I’ve got a good question for him. He said that without school, we would still be in the Stone Age. Since there were no schools for cavemen at that time, how did the cavemen learn new things without teachers to show this to them?
ReplyDeleteKipa Sherpa, I thought that the comment you made on president Obama’s speech was riveting. However, it did leave me with a few questions. You said that on a scale of one to five you would rate the word “education” a four. I don’t completely understand your scale; is one acting as the highest and five the lowest? Or is it five the highest and one the lowest? Either way, you said that the thesis of the speech was education, but you didn‘t rank that as the highest.
ReplyDeleteI’m not sure I agree with you on the subject of the economy and swine flu being our biggest challenge, but I do agree on some level. With the economy being in the state that it is, we have to work extra hard and try our best to just scrape by. It will be quite hard, if not impossible, if we’re all sick at home with swine flu! I, however, think that our biggest issue is global warming. With the burning of fossil fuels and all the emissions, our ozone layer is being torn apart, letting in more sunlight. I am confident that eventually, global warming will end the world. So, I do understand your concerns, but the economy and swine flu will be of little importance when the world is burning down.
Mr. Rose, I agree with the most part of your comment. I agree about staying in school, and not giving up on America. However, I don’t agree with you saying that your generation will surely stop global warming. Not all people think the same way. Many people are greedy, and they don’t care if they harm the planet, they just need money to stay productive. What if they are almost broke, and have no other choice but polluting? Global warming doesn’t stop just because a few people protest. So how can you be so sure that your generation will stop global warming? What drastic actions will you take?
ReplyDeleteI think that Ms.Sherpa’s response was short, straight to the point and original. Ms.Sherpa thinks the thesis of the speech is to get the best education possible. She stated that your not going to just land into a good job by the snap of your fingers, you have to work for it. Ms.Sherpa believes that the three most important words are responsibility, education and success. Ms.Sherpa also thinks that the challenges of our generation are the stock market, economical crisis and the swine flu (H1N1). My questions for Ms.Sherpa is what can our generation do to help improve this economical crisis? How can we do it?
ReplyDeleteCynthia Lee thinks that in our spare time, we should be doing something useful like reading or writing. Ms. Lee thinks that we shouldn't be playing around and watching T.V., but devoting our time to what is most important, and what will help us to get a better education. Ms. Lee also thinks that responsibility, destiny, and succeed are the three most important words of the speech. This brings me to my question- By saying that destiny and succeed are important, does that mean that education and future are not as important to you?
ReplyDeleteJennifer Ferd thinks “One of the challenges of my generation is not having a safe environment to study in. Since September 11, 2001, the world would have been living in fear of what might happen tomorrow. The government should ensure safer environment for children.” I really like this comment because she included a past event and made a good point that a safe environment is a challenge for our generation. Jennifer is right; the government should ensure a safer environment for children.
ReplyDeleteSome questions I have are; how will the government ensure a safe environment for children? Also why is a safe environment important for studying? I ask these questions because it is hard for the government to ensure safe environments, but it is not impossible and they should give students a safe place to study. Also students could study at home and lock the doors. Even though they could do that, there should still be a safe place beside their home that a child could feel comfortable in without having any fears.
To ensure a safe place to study the government should open a recreational place that is safe. This way all kids who do not live in the greatest neighborhood could be off the streets and safe from crime. That is what I thought of the comment.
The comment I thought was the most interesting and detailed was Ms. Mirheta Osmanovic. Ms. Osmanovic thinks that we should all stay in school and study more so we can do the best of our abilities. Ms. Osmanovic wrote that instead of playing games and going on the computer the minute we get home, we should get our homework over with, and instead of playing after that you should read or write a story. She explained to us in her writing assignment that we have to try to do our best this year, and that we have all moved up another grade things are going to be harder, and more challenging. Ms. Osmanovic explained that if we are to miss projects or fail tests that is going to take a lot of points off of you grade in that subject which takes off of your over all average. Ms. Osmanovic wrote a lot on what you need to know for this year, what you are expected to know from last year, and to try your best because if you are in an important grade you will need to give it all of your knowledge and skills your teachers taught you last year.
ReplyDeleteThe question I have for Ms. Osmanovic is if the child said he/she had studied, but they had failed their test, what can you do to help or find out the truth? Maybe if they didn’t want to tell you that they were having trouble at home, or his/hers parents are not caring?

Ms. Kaufman thinks that one of the challenges of my generation is staying true to yourself. She said that a lot of kids are put under pressure to do things that they don't want to do. Even if it tempts you, you must hold yourself back and stick with what you believe in. Giving in to the pressure will create a bad future for you and America.
ReplyDeleteI have a question for you about these challenges. What would you do if some of the children in our generation choose their own desicion to do drugs or drink alchohol?
Mr. Lee inspiring ideas about that we choose our own future so we should try. He was right about not playing instead work on something. Not to play the xbox or watch T.V. I agree on what he said.I think that if you add a specific couple of sentence it probably will inspire alot of people. So what I’m asking is how are you going to make people read this or inspire them to do the same?

ReplyDeleteI think that Derek’s comment was short but very thoughtful and interesting because he talked about what school can do for us and how it will help us in life. He put a lot of details into his comment. I agree with him when you quit school you quit on yourself and your country. He has answered most of my questions but the ones he didn’t answer were how students are going focus on school work if we are having so many budget cuts? How is global warming going to stop when people keep polluting the earth? So my question is with all these budget cuts how are students going to be able to focus in school and how is global warming going to stop when everyone just keeps polluting the earth.
ReplyDeleteDaniel Ng’s comment was quite interesting. It was long with many details. I agree with you about everyone has their responsibilities. Teachers inspire us to learn. Parents are to keep the kids to stay on track and our responsibilities to not to play games twenty four seven. Also on what you said about if you want to find a cure for cancer you need to work in school and not drop out of school. You answered all the questions well. My question is on your third paragraph. How are we going to make everyone safe in this world?
ReplyDeleteKlya thinks that the challenges of her generation are teenage pregnancy, guns, gang violence, terrorists,
ReplyDeleteHIV/AIDS and lack of education and confidence. She said that we are faced with so many challenges in this generation and prays that one day we can live in a safer and healthier world. My question to her is: What do you think you could do in your generation to try to stop or at least stop less people to do/have gang violence, weapons (guns), and teenage pregnancy? I chose Kylas comment because she was the only one who was talking about pregnancy and gang violence , terrorists, HIV, aids and lack of things, she really got to my attention. I asked her this question because since she’s talking about her challenges I was thinking if she was going to help prevent it from happing a lot and how she would do it instead of just saying.
